I was a Marvel kid. The heroes and villains just seemed so much more colorful, the art seemed more vibrant.

I was also a Marvel kid and didn't really get into DC until I was a lot older and began collecting comics in earnest. Now, I've learned to love a lot about the DC U and its characters and storylines but I will always prefer Marvel.
Oddly enough, when you're dealing with stuff that can be as cheesy and silly as superheroes, I've always felt Marvel handled that aspect better and made its characters seem more real and believable while DC to this day feels the need to hang onto the same sort of names, costumes and style many of their characters had in the fifties and earlier. Just on the surface level Marvel seemed to have a better handle on things. Here are two very old characters from each company that have always been compared for obvious reasons: Marvel's Namor the Submariner and DC'S Aquaman. Even if you know nothing about either, which one just sounds cooler? And while Aquaman has seen his origin and even overall look change multiple times over the decades almost nothing about Namor has been retconned. Because even though he was created in freaking 1939, Namor is still cool and works well in contemporary stories. With Aquaman it always feels like DC is bending over backwards to keep him relevant.
So is that an unfair example since Aquaman is kind of universally known (rightly or wrongly) for seeming lame? If anyone would like some others, I'd be happy to provide them. Or just chime in on the issue.
pizowell> I really think the major difference between the characters is that Marvel just has cooler villains overall. I know it's a subjective thing and there's no "right" or "wrong" to it but consider this: one of Marvel's most popular enduring heroes is of course Captain America. Some of his arch villains include Red Skull, Baron Zemo, Crossbones, the organizations of AIM and Hydra, the Master Man (Nazi version of a supersoldier), Sin (Red Skull's daughter) and Taskmaster. I'm not saying those are amazing villains - probably not as good as Spidey's or the X-Men's but let's compare them to one of DC's most popular and enduring characters, the Flash. Here are some of his enemies: Mirror Master, Captain Cold, Gorilla Grodd, Captain Boomerang, Weather Wizard and...Zoom.
(I'd like to point out that until just a few weeks ago I was actually collecting more DC comics in my account than Marvel - as I stated before I still love DC)
